The Brazilian Photonics Society (SBFoton) and the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS) announce the organization and realization of the 2021 International Conference on Optical MEMS and Nanophotonics, OMN 2021. The 25th edition of this successful conference will be held at the University of Campinas (Unicamp)’s Convention Center, in the city of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil, in the period of August 1st – 5th, 2021.

OMN 2021 is an annual conference that draws in leading researchers, who are harnessing light, or photons, and control its propagation phenomena via interaction with produced structures at the micro and nano scale. This leads to diverse applications in technology fields such as imaging, communication, sensing, and instrumentation, as well as the sciences such as biology and medicine, chemistry and fundamental physics. The conference is designed for researchers to report on the latest findings on Optical MEMS and Nanophotonics and stimulate scientific exchange among researchers and engineers from industry and academia.

OMN 2021 will follow the typical format of IEEE events, therefore, will include technical oral and poster sessions with the presentation of peer-reviewed papers (oral and poster), Plenary Talks, and Invited Talks.

Registration & Submission

Prospective authors are encouraged to submit an original full paper for review, and presented papers will be further published by IEEE Xplore (indexed by Web of Science and Scopus). Acceptance will be communicated on May 17th 2021 and final version upload until May 31st 2021.

What’s Matter Quantum Photonic Chip for Quantum Communication and Computing

In the past twenty years, silicon photonic technology and waveguide integrated device are greatly stimulated extensive research in fiber optical transistor from 100 Gbps to 400Gbps. Silicon photonics fabrication and integration are very powerful and significant breakthrough for traditional fibre optical communication and optical/photonic engineering, which is not only advantage of batch processing to address the manufacturing, but also make impact in the next generation of quantum network and quantum computing.

This talk will introduce and present: design and fabrication of quantum key distribution (QKD) chip, which in different components related to splitter, tunable MZI, switches and photodetector will be discussed. The fabrication processes will be explained for QKD chip. This talk will be concluded with the future trends and research directions in quantum integrated chip and silicon photonic integration technologies.

On the control of reconfigurable photonics integrated circuits

A collection of control, calibration, tuning and locking strategies and recipes for photonic integrated circuits are presented and discussed. The focus will be on ring based tunable and hitless filters and reconfigurable meshes of Mach-Zehnder Interferometers to manipulate optical beams and perform signal processing.

How does an idea of immersive display evolve into multiple innovations in personalized medicine?

I was interested in future immersive display systems when I was a doctoral student, and that's why I was into optical MEMS. Due to the massive amount of data that needs to be processed in the display system, I thought it should be a self-assembled form of identical active display components that should organize itself as a display panel later. I proposed 'smart scalable systems' as a research theme that could enable such a massive system in display, energy, and biochips based on self-assembly of many heterogeneous components. Though the immersive display by self-assembly is still just an idea, this concept of smart scalable systems evolved into multiple biotech innovations for the past 15 years in my research group. I will present the concept of smart scalable systems first. Then I will talk about our researches in structural colored microparticles, DNA laser printer, life-saving antibiotic test, laser-based single-cell genomics, a few of which already become commercial products. It is even more interesting I am applying again the technique I learned from these researches back to displays that use self-assembly. Life is a journey full of expectations and surprises.
